How the Project came About
Observer House is a mental health centre located in Shrewsbury in partnership with Shropshire Mind. The Shropshire Archives met with us to discuss the possibility of working together to produce an artwork to be displayed at The Archives. We decided upon a project to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Telford, 2007. We originally discussed the possibility of making a quilt or textile wall hanging and a group of us went to the Archives to look at some design books and photographs from Telford's time.
We particularly liked Laura's Tower and the milestone markers and an old photograph of Buildwas Bridge, all of which were designed by Telford. With help from Elisha, the art therapist, Jenny Brazier and Bob Gemmell we came up with a design based on the photograph of Buildwas Bridge, but we decided it would be easier to produce in acrylics. We used nine canvases and each one was completed by a different person, it has resulted in a very colourful painting.
Sadly one of the artists, Derek Harris passed away during the making of this project, so we have dedicated it to his memory.
Radbrook College Pamper Day
Bob Byrne, Chair of Shropshire Mind, said a big thank you to the students of Radbrook College Beauty department when he accepted a cheque for £383.41, on behalf of the charity. The students had raised the money with a Pamper Day, held at the college, in remembrance of a friend who had died. Fellow students planted a commemorative tree.
Ludlow Golf Club Charity Raffle
Jenny Kelly, ladies’ Captain, recently organised her most successful fundraising event since taking office in January. She persuaded five of the lady members: Val Alexander, Celia Russell, Jessie Yapp, Mary Price and Margaret Hill to each produce a painting. 650 players took part in the raffle and £917 was raised for Shropshire Mind. The picture shows Jenny with the paintings.
World Mental Health Day
Shropshire Mind enjoyed the World Mental Health Day across the County. Events took place in the Market Square, Shrewsbury and at the library in Ludlow on the 10th October 2006.
Many thanks to all of the volunteers who generously gave their time and to the members of the public who came to see us on the day. A wide variety of workshops, talks and presentations took place raising the profile and awareness of mental health issues.

Second year Nursing Students who helped on the day and Mr Richard Jones, Company Secretary, Shropshire Mind, manning the barricades!.
Jonathan Mason, from Clarkes Solicitors, who represented Frank Bruno recently at Ludlow magistrates court agreed to donate its usual fee to Shropshire Mind as part of World Mental Health day. Shropshire Mind wishes to express it thanks to both Mr Mason and Clarkes Solicitors for the generous donation of £411.25 and to Frank Bruno.
